GRAHAM PAINTER

1947 –2007

Graham was brought up in East Ham, London, and moved to Hutton, Essex, at the age of eleven. From then on, his love of the outdoors began. After a variety of jobs, it was not until Graham was in his late twenties that he decided that a complete change of career was needed. He completed a Foundation Course at Braintree College, Essex, followed by a three year course at Sheffield City Polytechnic where he attained a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting.

Graham’s talent was such that he painted in watercolour, oil and pastel with equal skill. He much admired the work of Turner, Joan Eardley and Kurt Jackson.

Graham strove to capture the feeling of light, space and the wonderful vibrant colours of the countryside. Having been a keen fisherman, he was always attracted to water. He loved best plein air painting, but when weather forbade it, classical music always kept him company while working in his studio.

Graham was a much respected teacher and, as so many painters, divided his time between teaching and painting. He roamed the land around the River Wid, which was often featured in his paintings.

Graham’s work can be found in many private homes and corporate premises. He always said he would reach his centenary, painting every day until he died. But tragically Graham died of complications following heart surgery a few after his 60th Birthday in August 2007.
